The passion in the alps has a tradition which reaches back far. Already in the late Middle Ages people tried to turn away threatening disaster or end existing one with penance and vows. Great public play has already been cultivated in Erl since the beginning of the 17th century. The „passion“ from once was a big mystery play making the impression of being a religious public theatre. The rootes of the passion play Erl date back to an Easter play of the Meistersinger Sebastian Wild from Augsburg, as the oldest text of the play from the year 1613 proves. At any playing season the text is being newly adapted. Already in early stages the passion play Erl detached itself from the pictorial impressions, which until today at passion plays elsewhere appear determinating. But also since the historical of the suffering and dying of Christ takes centre stage, the passion in Erl is still expression of the deep faith of religious, straightforward humans.
